The White House on Monday said it had little information about Egypt’s plans to relaunch its nuclear power program but declared itself “generally supportive” of civilian atomic power.
“I don’t know a lot about it. In general, we are supportive of countries pursuing civil nuclear energy. It’s clean burning. It provides electricity in a clean-burning and affordable way for citizens,” said spokeswoman Dana Perino.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Chief UN atomic watchdog Mohamed ElBaradei said Sunday he had no evidence that Iran is building nuclear weapons and accused US leaders of adding “fuel to the fire” with recent bellicose rhetoric.
“I have not received any information that there is a concrete active nuclear weapons program going on right now,” the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency told CNN.
“Even if Iran were to be working on a nuclear weapon … they are at least a few years from having such a weapon,” he said, citing assessments by US officials themselves.
“At this stage we need to continue to work through creative diplomacy … as I don’t see any other solution than diplomacy and inspections,” ElBaradei said.

LONDON (Reuters) – A British private security company is being sued in the United States over the death of a U.S. soldier hit by one of its convoys in Iraq, according to court documents.
The case, believed to be the first of its kind, comes six weeks after Iraq accused the U.S. security company Blackwater of using excessive force in an incident where 17 Iraqis were shot dead in Baghdad.
The case against Erinys, filed in a court in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday and also in London, was brought by the Perry Monroe, father of Christopher Monroe, a U.S. soldier who was struck by an Erinys vehicle while on duty in southern Iraq in October 2005.
The lawsuit accuses the Erinys convoy of ignoring warnings and traveling at excessive speed after dark without lights fully on, leading to an accident in which Monroe was hit, suffering severe injuries that led to his death.

Any chance of Blackwater being sued by Iraqis?

After five days and six people dead, the blazes are finally dying down.
“The fires are winding down. We’re starting to get control, except for the major fires in San Diego,” said Bill Peters, spokesman for the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “We’ll get them out, shifting more and more resources down there. And the weather helps.”

This morning on Fox News, hosts of the show Fox and Friends blamed the wildfires in California on a new culprit: al Qaeda. They pointed to a 2003 FBI memo, which raised the possibility that al Qaeda may try to set wildfires around the western United States. They also noted that men in a “hovering helicopter” saw “a guy starting one of these fires.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. lawmakers on Thursday offered apologies to a Canadian citizen who was deported by U.S. counterterrorism officials to Syria, where he says he was imprisoned and tortured.
Lawmakers from both parties also called on the Bush administration to apologize to Maher Arar, a Syrian-born software engineer still barred from entering the United States even though the Canadian government has cleared him of any links to terrorist groups.
“Our country made a mistake and has been unwilling to own up to it,” California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said. “It reflects an arrogance I don’t like to see in our government.”
An administration official said she was not aware of any plans for the White House to issue an apology to Arar.
